Katherine Knotts

Freelance writer, editor & coach

You've got great insights. You just don't know how to get them out into the world where they'll make an impact.
In that moment before you first put a pen to paper - the piece you envision in your mind is absolutely perfect. Turning your potential into actual prose, however, is far from straightforward. In fact, the writing process can mire you in anxiety, self-doubt, and frustration. Trust me, I know. But I also know that it doesn't have to.

Wherever you are in your creative process, I can help you move forward. Clients approach me with different challenges, and I coach them to
resolution in different ways.

"I've got a great idea, but I don't know what to do with it."

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
WHAT I DO: Help you to define, refine, and organise your vision into a coherent whole. Along the way, we'll talk about what you're trying to achieve, and for whom.
WHAT YOU END UP WITH: A detailed outline of your writing project in line with your audience, objectives and resources.

"I've got a draft, but I have no idea if it's any good."

PROJECT EVALUATION
WHAT I DO: Review your draft to evaluate whether you're on track to achieve your goals. I'll flag up both strengths and weaknesses, so you have a sense of what's working (and what's not).
WHAT YOU END UP WITH: Detailed feedback on your draft in terms of organisation, content, and style. This will frame our discussion on how you move forward.

"I hate the sound of deadlines whooshing by."

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
WHAT I DO: Work with you to identify crunch points and opportunities, and help you make marginal gains that will improve your efficiency as a writer.
WHAT YOU END UP WITH: A writing strategy that works for you, and fewer irate phone messages from your publisher.

"I'm too terrified to start/finish/even look at my laptop."

DRAIN UNBLOCKING
WHAT I DO: I help you to understand that writer's block is always a symptom, and never a disease. We'll work together to identify the root cause, and then I'll help you escape the rut (usually with some combination of hand-holding and skill-building).
WHAT YOU END UP WITH: Words on the page that are as fabulous as the ones in your head.

"I'm a writer - but I want to be a better writer."

BOOT CAMP
WHAT I DO: Help you step back from what you're saying and think about how you're saying it. I'll hone your skills on key things like structure, voice, style, using narratives, writing for impact, the aesthetics of punctutation and other really geeky things.
WHAT YOU END UP WITH: Words on the page that are as fabulous as the ones in your head. Also, happier copy-editors.

"I've got my first draft. How do I turn it into a final draft?"

WHAT I SAY: Sounds like you need a killer editor. Good thing I know one .

"I'm done. Now how do I get published?"

PITCHING
WHAT I DO: I can help you decide where to pitch your story, and help you develop a killer pitch. If it's a book you've got up your sleeve, then I'll put on my publisher hat .
WHAT YOU END UP WITH: Your words, out in the world, helping you achieve your goals.

"I'm a horrible grammar pedant. What should I do?"

WHAT I SAY: That doesn't strike me as a problem at all. Embrace it. And go read Strunk and White's Elements of Style .
